Vervaine

quatre eaux, une ligne

A perfumer with four fragrances and no photography. Mucha built every poster from the same three zones: a halo behind the subject, ornament pilasters holding the trim, and a cartouche at the foot carrying the dull information. Vervaine keeps all three and adds one rule of its own.

I

The mark

The name in a high contrast serif, centred, with a hairline rule beneath carrying the trade line. It is the only element in the system the line never touches.

Parfumeur

Primary lockup with an ornament panel

Centred
Always. This is the one system in the set where symmetry is correct, because the halo is a circle and everything answers to it.
Rule
A hairline in gold, the width of the name, carrying one word. Never two words and never a sentence.
Case
The name keeps its capital. The trade line is spaced capitals at a third of an em.
Never
Never let the whiplash line cross the name. The line belongs to the ornament and the name belongs to the reader.
II

The line

One unbroken stroke enters the left pilaster, passes behind the halo and leaves through the right. It is drawn from the plant the fragrance is made of, and it is the only thing that changes between the four.

Eau

Unbroken
One path, drawn in a single stroke. If it has to be lifted, the drawing is wrong.
Entry and exit
It enters the left pilaster and leaves the right at a different height, so the eye travels across rather than around.
Behind
The line passes behind the halo, never across it. The halo is the only element with a hard edge.
Weight
The stroke thickens and thins along its length. A line of constant weight is a border, not a whiplash.
III

Colour

Four muted colours and a gold, on a cream that is never white. There is no black anywhere in the system, including in the type, which is a warm brown instead.

Olive#6E7B4BVervaine, the house scent. The halo ring on anything unnumbered.
Plum#6E3B4ENuit. The only colour permitted at full strength on a label.
Terracotta#B4795CMiel. Warmest of the four and the hardest to print evenly.
Gold#C9A227Every rule and every halo edge. Foil where the budget allows, flat where it does not.
Brown#3A3227All type. There is no black ink in the house, on paper or on screen.
IV

Typography

A high contrast serif for the name and a book face for everything else. Nothing is set in a sans, including the legal text on the carton, which costs a little legibility and is worth it.

Applications

The three zones scale down to a bottle label thirty millimetres wide. On the smallest items the pilasters vanish and the halo becomes a hairline circle, which is the minimum.

What breaks it

Art Nouveau collapses into pastiche faster than anything else in the set. These four are the specific ways it happens.

×
Do not break the line Two separate flourishes are decoration. One continuous stroke is a drawing, and the difference is visible at a glance even if nobody can name it.
×
Do not cross the halo The halo is the one hard edge in the system. A line over it removes the only place the eye can rest.
×
Do not use a constant weight A stroke of even thickness is a border. The swelling and thinning is what makes it read as drawn rather than as a shape.
× Vervaine
Do not use black on white The house has no black ink and no white stock. On white the golds turn to mustard and the whole palette reads as cheap.
